Travel Guide

Dutch is the national language of Holland but English is spoken by almost everyone in Amsterdam. The currency is the Euro (EUR, €). Credit cards are widely accepted. There are numerous ATM machines throughout Amsterdam. Shops and markets are closed all day Sunday and many on Monday mornings. There is late-night shopping on Thursdays. Since the beginning of 2005, it has been prohibited to smoke in all trains, stations, waiting areas and on platforms. Special smoking areas have now been created.

The Amsterdam Pass comprises a transportation ticket, a card for free admission to museums and a pass guide containing vouchers for discounts at restaurants and attractions. It’s available in Dutch, English, French and German from the tourist offices. The pass is the size of a credit card. There are three different types available, for twenty-four, forty-eight or seventy-two hours. As well as being able to use all public transport, you can enter many attractions for free and go on a free canal boat tour.
